National Recovery Month
With this week marking the half-way point of the 22nd annual National Recovery Month, we wanted to take a few minutes to highlight exactly why this month is so important:
- Every year, the month of September is seen as a national observance which teaches the simple fact that additional treatment and mental health services can enable those suffering from a substance abuse problem or mental health disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.
- National Recovery Month also celebrates those who have made the helpful steps and are now in recovery, acknowledges the contributions of treatment providers, and importantly, promotes the message that recovery is truly possible.
- This year’s theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Recovery Benefits Everyone,” is aimed at drawing light to the importance of educating policymakers, health care providers, employers and the general public about the role of treatment and recovery services.
Millions of people struggle with addiction every day, and for many, their addiction will go untreated and unnoticed until it becomes a life-threatening problem and they hit rock bottom. There are also millions of lives that have been transformed through addiction recovery that are equally unnoticed.National Recovery Month aims to be a way to celebrate those victories. A way for thousands of treatment and recovery programs and services around the country to celebrate their successes with their friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, and even strangers; sending the message that yes, recovery is possible.
Many of us have been affected by addiction within our lifetime. If you or a loved one is battling alcohol and drug addiction don’t be afraid to reach out… you are not alone!
